ISPConfig – Open Source Web Hosting Panel

ISPConfig is an Open Source software package for managing shared web hosting. It is a free alternative to software like Plesk and CPanel, and supports all major Linux distributions (no Windows support). It provides a web-based control panel interface for managing all the hosting services including the Web, FTP, DNS, and mail servers. This basically eliminates the need to know how it all works (though it doesn't hurt to know).

Installation is completely automated, and takes only a few minutes if you are installing on a clean system. Keep in mind, however, that troubleshooting can be difficult if something goes wrong. Paid installation service is also available.

If you are looking for an alternative to expensive hosting control panels, this is it. You may also be interested to know that this website (and others hosted at UltraMega) is managed using this software. It really makes things much easier.

About This Blog (WordPress)

Welcome to the UltraMega weblog, where various Web development related topics will be explored. This also includes insight to the various projects I work on. I hope to provide some useful information to the Internet community.

This blog is powered by WordPress, a very popular and powerful blogging platform. This is a fairly standard installation, with a modified template and some plugins for added functionality. One of the best thing about WP is its flexibility and strong plugin-writing community. There are virtually unlimited possibilities with what can be done with this free open source software! Everything is also so easy to install that anyone with an FTP client can do it.

Some examples of plugins that I have deployed here include: the All in One SEO Pack, which makes it easier for search engines to properly index the site; WP-Codebox, providing code syntax highlighting which is helpful for programming tutorials; Collapsible Archive Widget, which you can see on the right; and the Multi-page Toolkit, allowing pagination in posts. More may be added as needed.

If you are interested in having your own WordPress blog but have no Web hosting, check out WordPress.com, where you can get a free hosted blog.
